Dunning has Options for High School Enrollment

September 30th kicks off online registration for the 2020 – 2021 school year.

Parents of incoming freshmen are beginning the arduous and oft times competitive process of enrolling their child in a public high school.

Throughout Chicago many covet a spot in one of Chicago’s 11 Selective enrollment High schools.  The reality is that most of Chicago’s incoming freshmen will be headed for their local neighborhood schools.

In the Dunning Community we have good Neighborhood High School options.

Steinmetz College Prep located at 3030 N Mobile Avenue has a new invested principal, hardworking union teachers, and support from the 36th ward alderman and the greater community.

A recent acquisition of a new multi-million dollar athletic field and ADA Compliant upgrades to the building shows the city’s commitment to the success of Steinmetz College Prep.  In order to apply to Steinmetz you must live in the attendance boundary and select it under the “Neighborhood” option on the GoCPS Application.

For those who reside in the Canty, Dever, and Bridge area there is an option for incoming freshman to be enrolled in the Taft Freshman Campus located at 4071 N Oak Park Avenue.

Completed in 2019, this state of the art building houses 7th, 8th, and 9th graders.  This middle school and freshman only campus provides a unique experience, where they join their peers sophomore year at the Taft Main Campus 6530 W Bryn Mawr Ave.

This program can be selected as your “Regular Choice Program” on the GoCPS application.  The caveat is that the selection “Taft HS General Education for Preference Zone” must be first ranked in this category.

Just because you are in the zone doesn’t mean your are insured enrollment, it is a lottery and not guaranteed.

A few things to remember:

  1.  Be sure to select “Taft HS General Education for Preference Zone.”
  2. In the “Regular Choice Program” Category you must rank “Taft HS General Education for Preference Zone”  as your first choice.
  3. If you start at another CPS High School you CANNOT transfer to Taft.
  4. If you started at a private school you CAN transfer into the Taft Freshman Campus.

Go to the CPS Locator to confirm if you reside in the proximity boundary or call the Office of Planning and Data Management at 773. 553. 3270 to confirm.

For assistance with enrollment and the GoCPS system call the Office of Access and Enrollment at 773. 553. 2060.
